Pastoral care

Our mantra is simple: every individual valued. We want every pupil to thrive and be recognised for the individuals they are.

Life does not always go smoothly for any of us, and we believe it is important to help our pupils develop a sense of perspective, enabling them, with adult support, to distinguish between the normal ups and downs of daily life, and more significant or persistent worries or difficulties. We also ensure that our students know that they can speak openly about emotional wellbeing, that they are equipped with the vocabulary to do so, and that they understand when and how they can seek help.

All staff have a responsibility for pastoral care and the emotional wellbeing of our pupils, with Form Teachers providing day-to-day care. Families are in regular contact with form teachers to ensure all support and care is joined up.

The Junior School uses a range of techniques to ensure every girls is heard, including access to class worry boxes and access to our ‘Listening Ear’  service, with trained staff offering support and guidance, as well as first aid and medical support when needed. Additional wellbeing and counselling sessions are available as appropriate.

The Junior School Leadership Team (JLT), led by The Junior School Headteacher, Mrs Beccy Newton, always keeps girls’ happiness and wellbeing as their top priority, and are ready to work with families to ensure all aspects of life at school help each child flourish and thrive. Every pupil knows that the team around them includes every adult in the school. We’re all here to help them find the confidence, purpose and joy that are The Abbey’s mission.

Academic help

We know every pupil progresses at different rates and there are times when we all need an extra boost. We also know that learning needs to be adapted to different learning needs and styles.

At the Junior School the Support of Learning team, guided by the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENDCo), is there to help every student who needs some initial guidance. This might range from extra sessions where a deeper understanding is needed to the first stages of supporting specific learning needs.
