Climate Action Plan (CAP)
The Abbey Climate Action Plan (CAP) is built around four core objectives:
- Promote awareness of climate change, sustainability, and a lasting appreciation of nature among students.
- Prepare students responsibly for the future, including opportunities in green careers.
- Implement effective strategies to improve sustainability while reducing the school’s carbon footprint.
- Monitor progress accurately and celebrate achievements across all areas.
These objectives align closely with the strategic priorities set out in the Department for Education’s (DfE) Sustainability and Climate Action Plans initiative:
- Excellence in education and skills for a changing world: preparing all young people for a world impacted by climate change through learning and practical experience.
- Reducing direct and indirect emissions from education and care buildings, driving innovation to meet legislative targets and providing opportunities for children and young people to engage practically in the transition to net zero.
- Resilience to climate change: adapting our education and care buildings and system to prepare for the effects of climate change.
- A better environment for future generations: enhancing biodiversity, improving air quality and increasing access to, and connection with, nature in and around education and care settings.
In line with DfE guidance, the Abbey CAP is structured around four key pillars: biodiversity and nature; climate education and green careers; decarbonisation, resilience and adaptation; and waste, consumption, and recycling.
The Abbey CAP also supports the Abbey School Development Plan 2025–2030, particularly its strategic aims to provide students with future-ready opportunities and to encourage collaboration between students and staff on environmental action and awareness, while achieving the highest standards of sustainability.
