ASROGA Benevolent Fund

ASROGA was established in 1903 and a Benevolent Fund was set up following the death of Islay Campbell Hickie, a former Head Girl, in 1923. With a small amount retained for administration costs, the majority of the Benevolent Fund income is awarded in scholarships and grants.

The Sixth Form Gap Year Travel Scholarship was launched in 2004 as part of this fund, for its newest members undertaking projects abroad before taking up their place at University. Frequently there is fierce competition for selection to take part in these schemes, and successful candidates have to raise considerable sums. In its inaugural year, two main awards and five smaller awards were made for projects in Guyana, Vietnam, New Zealand, Zambia, South Africa and West Africa.

Medical students often undertake a Medical Elective, a part of their studies which must take place overseas. The work involved is varied, often in developing nations, and is of tremendous help to the local population as well as being of benefit to the student. ASROGA has been pleased to award grants to members for this important part of their medical training.

Many Old Girls become involved with charitable organisations at home and abroad, some volunteering to work for them, others becoming involved in the organisation and running of the charity. All are united in their passion for their charity and their desire to raise funds to enable them to help those in need.

The grants which ASROGA has been able to make so far, although of necessity limited in number each year, have been much appreciated and have resulted in several very interesting reports in the Annual Newsletter.

In certain circumstances, and at the Headmistresses' recommendation, awards may also be made to current pupils.

ASROGA would like to continue its worthwhile activity in this direction, but it is dependent on having a continued flow of income. Membership fees go directly to the Benevolent Fund, which is administered by the ASROGA Committee separately from the School. Applications or requests for sponsorship should be made to Mrs Patsy Thornton, ASROGA Chairman, and applications on behalf of current pupils will be made to ASROGA via the Headmistress.

The Benevolent Fund would be delighted to accept donations at any time; the more funds that are available, the more widely they can be distributed.
