Sociology Department

Sociology is offered at A.S. and A2 Level in the Sixth Form.

Sociology is a social science and this means that it involves the study of society in a systematic way, looking for patterns in individual behaviour.  Sociologists are curious in that they always enter a situation and ask, ‘Why?’  Everyday experiences and interactions are of interest to sociologists as well as the role of society’s institutions in shaping behaviour.

Sociology has a strong theoretical base, ranging from the classical theories to contemporary postmodernism.  Potential students should be interested in debating social, global, political, economic, cultural and philosophical issues.  Sociology students will acquire a range of transferable skills such as the ability to analyse, evaluate, apply and present material that will be useful as a basis for a variety of future courses and careers.  Past sociology students have gone on to study the subject at universities such as Warwick, Bristol, Sussex, L.S.E. and Cambridge either as a single honours or combined with subjects such as politics, anthropology and law.

Sociologists can be found in all walks of life – researching for a range of government departments such as the Home Office, devising the socio-economic classification system on which the Census is based, advising prime ministers, (Anthony Giddens was the author of the Third Way which formed the basis of New Labour policies), working in human resources management, in the police force, in the media and journalism.
