History of Art Department
The AS specification provides opportunities for candidates to learn of the development and significance of the traditions of Western Art. This gives them a basis of understanding which can be extended into other cultures and traditions in the A2 modules. Students will be concerned with, and should understand, the contexts in which art (interpreted as painting, sculpture and architecture) is created, to develop the appropriate art-historical skills involving direct observation, research and use of texts and documents.
This course assumes no previous knowledge of History of Art and is suitable for the diverse range of candidates who wish to develop their interest and enjoyment in the study of art history, fostering its value in lifelong learning.
History of Art combines with ANY A level and students may wish to continue to degree level or associated university subjects e.g. Architecture, Environmental Design, Museum Management, Fine Art, Advertising, Restoration and Art consultant/auctioneer.
