Modern Foreign Languages
At The Abbey we teach French, German and Spanish to GCSE, AS, A2 and University entrance level. At present, pupils study French until the end of Upper III (Year 7). In the Lower IV (Year 8) all students are given the opportunity to start a second modern language, Spanish or German. At the end of Upper IV (Year 9) all three languages have equal status and pupils decide whether to continue with their two languages or only one to GCSE, AS and A2 level.
The three separate departments work in co-operation and each has a dedicated teaching room with overhead computer technology, TV, video and excellent sound systems. They share a Multi Media Suite complete with a technician. The three different languages are taught in a lively and communicative way by committed and enthusiastic teachers but also importance is also attached to the understanding of grammar and the study of the countries' literatures and cultures.
The three departments participate jointly in the Languages Day, held annually, and offer Clubs, trips, language courses in France and Spain and exchanges to Germany.
