History Department

“To know nothing about one’s past is to remain forever a child”, said Cicero. The study of History for at least the first three years in the senior school, and it is to be hoped, for several years beyond, is essential for anyone to grow into a thoughtful and mature adult.

The department seeks to imbue pupils with enthusiasm for the past and a love of the subject; to give them a sense of time and insight into their own culture and that of others. Thinking and analytical skills of a high order are encouraged and academic rigour is maintained whilst making the study of the past exciting and stimulating, incorporating the use of modern technology. The study of History at The Abbey provides pupils with essential general knowledge.

At least one activity beyond the curriculum is offered to every year group on a regular basis, either an outing or an activity of some other kind. Conferences addressed by leading historians are attended regularly by the Sixth Form. In addition, pupils have the opportunity to take part in an Educational Cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean when treasures of the ancient civilisations of Greece, Turkey and Egypt can be experienced.
