Art Department
Art and Design (Fine Art)

Art is a particular strength of The Abbey School. Our girls enjoy expressing and developing their creativity and many of the school corridors celebrate their talents through the display of the students' works of art. Public examination results achieved by candidates taking Art are often outstandingly high, indicative of the many hours dedicated to the exceptional creativity of the girls' work.
Art is a form of communication and expression; a visual language, which deals with the construction and interpretation of both personal and cultural meaning. Attainment in art is achieved through the creative development of process, production, reflection and evaluation, leading toward skills, knowledge and understanding.
Pupils are taught and encouraged through a series of structured programmes to:
- Record their responses to direct experience, observation and imagination;
- Develop ideas for their work, investigating visual and other sources of information;
- Explore and use a range of media for working in two and/or three dimensions;
- Review, modify and refine work as it progresses and realise intentions;
- Identify the distinctive characteristics of art, craft and design and relate them to the context in which the work was created, making connections with their own work;
- Make critical judgement about art, craft and design, using a specialist vocabulary.
