Spanish Department

Clubs and Events

http://www.theabbey.co.uk/curriculum/senior/images/815_sitespec.gifFor Sixth Form students, we run a Spanish Cine-club in one of the rooms in the Sixth Form Block.  It is aimed at AS and A2 Spanish students in general but it is also open to pupils who do not study Spanish. We cover many aspects of Latin- American and Spanish cultures via the medium of film and have seen films by many different directors, from the well-known, such as Pedro Almódovar, Carlos Saura and Jose Luis Garcí, to the lesser known, such as Isabel Coixet and Achero Mañas.  We also show very good adaptations of some literary classics. This year, time has not permitted a discussion forum following the viewing of the films, but in the future we hope to develop this.

We offer a conversation club for LV and UV. We also offer a club for beginners and pupils who would like to learn Spanish but have chosen another option as their second language.  It takes place once a week at lunchtime in the Modern Languages Laboratory.

Every other year, a visiting Spanish theatre company performs adaptations of literary classics, for all our students.

We celebrate Modern Languages Day each year, with our French and German colleagues.  We begin the day by singing, in Assembly, a hymn using the three languages and throughout the day there is an array of different activities.  At lunch, of course, we are able sample some of the culinary delights of the French, Spanish and German cuisines.
