Trips
History provides opportunities for every year group to branch out beyond the immediate curriculum.
UIII pupils study the Medieval world and we take them to Winchester Cathedral where they become monks for part of the day; they have fun as medieval craftsmen, creating gargoyles and have a chance to study the architecture of this beautiful building.
Every year, UIV visits the battlefields of the First World War for a day trip in the summer term. We go either to the Ypres area or to the Somme and pupils are encouraged to research the experiences of members of their extended families; it is sometimes possible to find the names of relatives on the Menin Gate, the memorial wall at Tyne Cot or on the Thiepval monument. A wreath is laid in memory. This helps to make real the experiences of the young men who fought in the conflict.
GCSE pupils visit the National Archives where they see the wealth of material which is collected there and handle the papers associated with the arrests and imprisonment of Suffragettes, for example, to enhance their course work on Votes for Women.
VI form pupils visit London to hear presentations from renowned academic historians.
