History Department

Clubs and Activities

History provides opportunities for every year group to branch out beyond the immediate curriculum.

LIV girls participate in an interactive Tudor and Stuart theatre workshop when the reigns of the Tudors and Stuarts are presented in ‘Reduced Shakespeare theatre’ style and pupils participate in some of the activities themselves.

There is also a Humanities Day in which the department co-operates with Geography and R.S. and also invites outside speakers and parents to present a day to broaden horizons on the theme of ‘India’ (see photograph left).

Film Club shows films with some historical associations during lunch hours when girls may take a picnic lunch with them to watch the movie; recent viewings have been Stephen Poliakoff’s ‘Lost Prince’ and the award winning  ‘Gandhi’.

A History Help Club is run regularly to enable girls to bring their study problems to members of the department for extra help in the lunch hour.

A VI Form Politics Club meets to discuss issues of the day on an informal basis.

The department also enters girls for national competitions; in recent years, we have had the national winner in the History of Parliament Competition who chose to write about slavery from the point of view of a slave owner and two students have received an honourable mention in the History Review magazine Julia Wood Competition for VI form students which is run in conjunction with St Hugh’s College, Oxford.
