GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT

FIELD TRIPS

U3 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP TO THE RIVER CHESS

The U3 travel to Amersham in March to investigate the down stream changes in the River Chess.  At each site the students measure the width, the depth, the wetted perimeter and the velocity of the river. This involves wadding into the water and hoping that our wellies are both long enough and waterproof! A great time is always had even if we generally get very wet.

L4 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP TO BOURNEMOUTH AND BARTON-ON-SEA

The L4 travel to Bournemouth and Barton-on-Sea in June to investigate the disappearance of Barton-on-Sea’s beach. At Bournemouth the students measure the beach and the groynes to discover the direction of longshore drift.  At Barton-on-Sea the students then decide what has happened to the beach and what could happen in the future to the coastline.

L5 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP TO LULWORTH COVE

The L5 GCSE Geographers travel to the Dorset coast in September to study Stair Hole and the Cove itself and then walk up the dreaded hill to Durdle Door.  The students studied the processes and features of wave erosion and practice their field sketches.  We also have time for an ice-cream!

L5 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP TO WALLINGFORD

The L5 GCSE Geographers visit Wallingford in June to collect data for their GCSE coursework.  The students carry out a variety of field work techniques throughout the day. These included pedestrian counts, car counts, environmental surveys and most important questionnaires, which focused on the local’s shopping habits.

L6 FIELD TRIP TO FLATFORD MILL

The L6 AS/IB Geography students attend a residential field trip in November to Flatford Mill Study Centre where they complete two field work projects; one in Colchester and the other along the River Brett, whilst also having the opportunity to study the plant succession on a salt marsh.
