French Department
Clubs and Events
In addition to lessons, the French Department endeavours to provide stimulus outside the classroom. A visiting touring company performs annually for Key Stage 3 pupils, a performance which is always greatly enjoyed.
At the other end of the scale, Club France Actualités is a club for all Sixth Formers who are studying French and any others who may wish to come along. We meet at lunchtime and a recording of the week’s news in French is shown. Key elements of the French language and culture are pointed out and there is discussion and explanation in both French and English.
Le Club francophone is intended for younger girls who have good French – perhaps through having lived in a French-speaking country or having a French parent - or who are very keen to improve the quality of their spoken French. The Club meets at lunchtime and occasionally after school and girls studying AS and A Level French help to direct the Club’s productions. Over the last few years we have produced Le petit chaperon rouge, Cendrillon and, most recently, Blanche Neige et les huit nains.
Modern Languages Day is held annually. The day begins with the singing of a hymn, each verse in a different language. Lunch has a distinctly European flavour and throughout the day there are various activities including, for example, quizzes and Lotto.
