Food Technology Department

Curriculum

Key stage 3

Year 7/UIII

Here the emphasis is on introducing students to a range of practical skills as well as an understanding of basic hygiene expectations in the Food room and recapping on any previous knowledge that they might have on healthy eating.  It is hoped that they will understand how to make healthy adjustments to different diets by investigating the balanced plate and the functions and food sources of the important nutrients in food.  Designing food products is another aspect of the work covered.

Year 9/UIV

Students are introduced to designing food products for people with different needs than their own. These needs may be dietary or cultural and they will also consider the influences of food from different cultures on products available in the supermarkets.

Initially, students will carry out two focused practical tasks where they are introduced to examples of particular dishes from a selection of different cultures.  They will then be required to choose either a person with a special dietary need or someone who is keen to sample foods from a different culture to their own and design and make a main meal for them.

Key stage 4

Year 10/LV

This course is organised around the Edexcel GCSE Food Technology specification.

During term1 the students are introduced to a variety of practical skills and opportunities are given to practise them.  In the theory lessons, students learn about nutrients, aspects of food processing and properties of ingredients.

During term 2 the students are introduced to the Design process and have opportunities to practise this with short Design and Make activities.

Throughout term 3 the work of terms1 and 2 continues and during the second half of this term the GCSE coursework assignment is introduced.

Year11/UV

The autumn and spring terms of this scheme are mainly devoted to the GCSE coursework assignment which accounts for 60% of the final grade.

In addition to the coursework element there are sections of work which must also be covered in order to prepare the students for the theory paper which accounts for 40% of the final grade.

Sixth form

Edexcel AS and Advanced Level Food Technology are offered.  Here students focus on the following key areas:  quality of food, processing of food, packaging and labelling, nutritional value and contribution to dietary control and sustained good health as well as health and safety.

Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their design and technology capability and develop their skills in planning, research, analysis, product development and evaluation.
