Science

At The Abbey Junior School, our girls assimilate a wealth of scientific knowledge through a variety of practical and stimulating experiments. We exercise their skills in scientific enquiry through planning, carrying out and reporting on investigations.

The curriculum broadly follows the QCA National Curriculum with adaptations and extension in order to meet more fully the needs and interests of the girls. This curriculum gives a wide based coverage of the subject whilst we ensure that individual topics are studied in detail. The richness of all-round scientific experience clearly contributes to the popularity of this subject.

Science is a vital part of The Abbey curriculum and is taught throughout the school.

At all ages, the Science curriculum is essentially based on a practical approach.

Children in Reception and at Key Stage 1 (5 to 7 years old) have lessons taught in the classroom environment by their class teacher while Key Stage 2 girls (7 to 11 years old) are taught by a specialist teacher in a well equipped, purpose built laboratory.

As part of the teaching and learning, visits are arranged along with speakers and demonstrations held in the school to broaden and stimulate interest and to show from every angle that science is fun!

LIII Science Investigator Club has proved great fun for the girls taking part. Using after school kits from Agilent Technology, and with the help of Mrs Glithro and Mrs Corbin (mother of Alice and employee of Agilent), they have 'caught' a thief, analysed owl pellets, made a thumb piano and investigated the properties of gloopy 'Oobleck'.
