PSHE & Citizenship
PSHE and Citizenship at The Abbey Junior School is not just a curriculum subject confined to lesson times - it is a way of life!
On entering the school, the girls are taught The Golden Rules:
- Do be gentle
- Do be kind and helpful
- Do work hard
-
Do look after property
- Do listen to people
- Do be honest
These rules form the foundation of our PSHE programme. In Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, the Golden Rules are reinforced through Golden Time, which is half an hour of fun activities chosen by the girls.
Common themes covered throughout the school within PSHE lessons include: Relationships, Keeping Safe, Health and Hygiene and Medicines and Drugs.

In addition to the PSHE programme, the girls learn how to become good citizens. Citizenship lessons introduce pupils to environmental issues, decision making and sustainability. They learn why rules and laws are made and how to resolve differences by looking at peaceful alternatives. Pupils are also encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences beyond the curriculum such as recycling projects, charity and c
itizenship days.
The girls learn to become active citizens within their school community through the Eco Schools, School Council and Buddy System. These initiatives teach the girls to take responsibility for themselves, others and the school environment.
Our aim is to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active, responsible citizens.
