Music

Music plays a very important part in the life of the Junior School. Girls in every year group are taught by a specialist teacher and have at least two lessons a week. From Lower I (Year 3) the timetable includes a year group singing lesson. Music lessons are practically based with an emphasis on performing, singing, listening and composing.

There are many extra curricular clubs run in school, including an orchestra, two choirs, percussion group, brass group, guitar ensemble and many recorder groups which take place either during lunch times or after school.

Girls have the opportunity from Lower I upwards to learn to play an instrument, and currently there are over 150 lessons given a week by 12 visiting instrumental teachers. The instruments offered are violin, cello, cornet, tenor horn, trombone, guitar, flute, piano, clarinet, bassoon and singing.

During the year many productions and concerts take place. These range from the Christmas production by the Early Years Centre to the Lower III (Year 6) play in June, giving every girl in the school the chance to perform at least once in the year.

Visiting musicians and trips to concerts or to take part in festivals enhance the curriculum. Past trips have included the Lower I Choir taking part in the Woodley Festival and wining the trophy for highest scoring Junior School choir. The Upper II girls take part annually in the Royal Schools of Church Music Schools Festival at Winchester Cathedral.
