Welcome

Brendan Fanning

It would be fair to say that Sixth Form is without doubt the most challenging and exciting part of a child’s school experience. It is also now the case that young women especially need to be equipped with the necessary skills and confidence that will allow them to succeed in life, and crucially in the workplace. This determination to create a well rounded, caring and independent-thinking person not afraid to make a decision, is at the heart of everything we do in the Abbey Sixth Form.

The Sixth Form at The Abbey School is very much based around the idea of a community. Students in the Upper and Lower Sixth mix together both within the Centre itself and through the age structure of tutor groups. Sixth Formers have a real appreciation for the fact that we as a school recognise that they are growing up and as a result require a very specialised form of support that doesn’t patronise but does praise. The Sixth Form is intentionally designed to have an atmosphere which is relaxed, enthusiastic and energetic. There is a healthy feeling of informality and respect.

Socially, the Sixth Form participate in a number of activities, including ice-skating, theatre trips, Christmas shopping in London and culminating in the Upper Sixth with a Leavers’ Ball.

We recognise the need for students to develop skills and experiences outside that of the purely academic. The Abbey School Sixth Form is very proud of its wide and varied enrichment programme, which allows these young women to enhance their personal development and general preparation for life beyond school.

The Sixth Form is dominated by a desire to produce happy, determined and positive individuals. It is a place where students are actively encouraged to flourish and find their full potential.
