In July 2010 a team of girls from The Abbey Sixth Form will be heading to Morocco on an adventurous expedition. The 19 students will have their eyes and ears opened to the sights and sounds of Marrakech, take part in a Community Project in a rural village, trek in the High Atlas Mountains and experience travel and life in a country and culture very different from our own. They may also meet some local camels!
The expedition is 12 days long and is sure to be a challenging, rewarding and exciting experience!
We will work with a local community near the mountain village of Imlil where we will help to develop their girls’ communal building which is used for everything from a pre school to a laundry area. Spending time with the local women and children will give us some insight into a very different lifestyle. After bidding farewell to our village hosts we will head out on our 4 day mountain trek. This will take us in to the High Atlas Mountains and will culminate with an ascent of Jebel Toubkal (at 4167m high, the highest point in Northern Africa). This will be a challenging trek through beautiful scenery and will be an incredible achievement for everyone! After a well earned rest day we will then go to the coast to relax for a day where we will have the opportunity to go on a camel safari. To round the trip off we will spend a day in Marrakech where the girls will experience shopping like they have never done before!
The key to enjoying trips like this are a good level of fitness and a sense of humour! This is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves and experience travel and adventure in a very different place. Some girls are also using the trek for their Gold D of E expedition and some are using the whole trip as a big part of their CAS/IB programme.
It’s sure to be very memorable! Richard Godfrey - Outdoor Education and D of E Coordinator
