Group 3: Business and Management

Business and Management may be taken as either a Group 3 or Group 6 subject. 

Course Overview

The course promotes the importance of exploring business issues from different cultural perspectives, encouraging a holistic view of the world of business.

The curriculum for business and management includes study of Business Organisation and Environment, Human Resources, Accounts and Finance, Marketing and Operations Management.

In addition, Higher Level students are expected to complete extension areas of study in all five topics, adding both depth and breadth to the course.  Higher Level students also study one extension topic, Business Strategy.

Assessment

Assessment consists of an examination based on a pre-issued case study and a structured question paper. SL students provide a written commentary based on three to five supporting documents about a real issue/problem facing a particular organisation. HL students undertake a research project and write a report that addresses an issue facing an organisation or analyses a decision to be made by an organisation.

Skills gained on this course

  • Development of the capacity to think critically about individual and organizational behaviour
  • Enhancement of the student’s ability to make informed business decisions
  • Appreciation of the nature and significance of change in a local, regional and global context
  • Awareness of social, cultural and ethical factors in the actions of organisations and individuals in those organisations
  • Appreciation of the social and ethical responsibilities associated with businesses operating in international markets.

Beyond IB

Business and Management is widely accepted by universities and employers. Many Abbey girls go on to take the subject at university and it can open up opportunities in management, retailing, marketing, sales, accountancy, research, the civil service and consultancy. Business and Management can be useful in many other subjects and careers because of the range of transferable skills learnt.
