Girls entering the Sixth Form have the opportunity to continue working towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Gold or Silver Level, or to take up the Award for the first time at these levels of their choice. There is a special opportunity for students to join a Gold Expedition group, which will begin training in the Lower Sixth for an assessed expedition later in the year. This expedition takes place in remote, challenging wilderness terrain such as the Brecon Beacons, Peak District or Snowdonia.
By taking part in Young Enterprise or the CAS element of the IB Diploma and other school activities like sport and music, other sections of the Award can be credited without undue extra time commitment. The Award is divided into skill, service, physical recreation and expedition at every level and the Gold Award also includes a residential activity.
The Gold Award especially is highly regarded by universities and employers because, to achieve it, the participant will have risen to a number of challenges and shown sustained commitment and enthusiasm. For Gold, each section has a longer time frame and there is an additional Residential section to complete. To complete the award at the highest level is seen as such a significant achievement that the awarding ceremonies take place in the presence of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Earl of Wessex at a royal palace.
