Clubs

Participation

Many lunchtime or after school clubs are specifically designed for Sixth Formers.

The art of debating is a skill much valued at university and in the outside world. Participating in a debate (as a formal speaker or from the floor of the House) develops the ability to think logically, constructively and analytically, to speak in an articulate and clear way, to listen to the views of others and to develop self-confidence. Students can become involved in:

  • Regular after-school debates held with Reading School.
  • External competitions run by the English-Speaking Union and the Oxford and Cambridge Unions - The Abbey School enters teams into all these competitions and in 2008 won the prestigious English-Speaking Union’s Schools Public Speaking Competition.
  • The European Youth Parliament - UK. The Abbey School enters a team for this.

Politics club is very popular and participants enjoy discussing current affairs as well as attending events and seeing high profile speakers on specially- arranged trips.

Mandarin Chinese is an increasingly popular club and girls can study for a recognised qualification.

Music, drama and sport clubs continue with the seniority of being in the Sixth Form adding to both the prestige and responsibility. For full details of clubs girls should consult The Abbey Edge.

Organisation

Students may also show initiative and leadership skills by organising clubs for younger girls. Recently Sixth Formers have run clubs such as jazz dance and have directed the Year 7 pantomime. Several girls help out at clubs at the Junior School ranging from chess to knitting..
