Computing

Why Computing?

The specification has been designed for students who wish to go on to higher education courses or employment where knowledge of Computing would be beneficial.  The course is not just about learning to use tools or a programming language; instead the emphasis of the course is on computational thinking. This is an important life skill which involves abstraction and decomposition.

Course Overview

Unit 1 - Problem Solving, Programming, Data Representation and Practical Exercise

This module covers the fundamentals of problem solving, programming and data representation. The systems development life cycle is also addressed.

Unit 2 - Computer Components, the Stored Program Concept & the Internet

The module looks at the fundamentals of computer systems, hardware elements of computers, machine level architecture and hardware devices.  The structure of the Internet, web page design and the consequences of the uses of computing are also covered.

Unit 3 - Problem Solving, Programming, Operating Systems, Databases & Networking

This module covers problem solving, programming concepts, real numbers, operating systems and databases.  Communication and networks are also addressed.

Unit 4 - The Computing Practical Project

The project is a substantial computer-based task and covers the following areas: analysis, design, construction/implementation, testing and evaluation.

Assessment

AS Level assessment is by written examination for Unit 2 - Computer Components, the Stored Program Concept & the Internet. Unit 1 (Problem Solving, Programming, Data Representation and Practical Exercise) is assessed via a computer based examination. A2 Level Unit 3 (Problem Solving, Programming, Operating Systems, Databases & Networking) is assessed by written examination. The Computing Practical Project (Unit 4) is written up and is also assessed.

 Beyond A Level

Students can go on to study Computer Science at one of the top universities in the country and then start a career with one of the many locally-based or international companies in the computer industry. Alternatively Computing is a sensible choice for those wanting to follow a career in mathematics, medicine, law, business, politics or any type of science.
