Fifth Form (Years 10 and 11)

You are now entering a key stage of your school career. You have chosen your options and so in addition to Maths, English, Philosophy of Religion, Science and a Modern Foreign Language  you are able to concentrate on subjects that you really want to explore.

You are considered to be in the upper part of the Senior School and as such your uniform changes - black jumpers, jackets and tights make you visible as senior members of the school.

Important features of Lower (Year 10) and Upper V (Year 11)

  • GCSE coursework and controlled assessment - there is plenty of this throughout the two years but DON'T PANIC. You will be given a clear schedule of the coursework deadlines at the beginning of each year and your teachers and form tutors are on hand to guide you through the process. Controlled assessment takes place in lesson time and you will be given advance warning of the dates and any preparation needed.
  • Careers programme - a comprehensive programme of careers guidance begins in Lower V with individual careers interviews for every girl. These are designed to start the process of considering Sixth Form choices and possible university courses. At the end of Lower V you will complete the tests and questionnaires for your Morrisby Profile. You will be given your personal profile at a feedback meeting at the beginning of Upper V and this is followed up by individual careers interviews and the formalising of 6th form choices.
  • Study skills - the "Reach for the Stars" study skills one day seminar is delivered in the first week of Lower V and gives valuable techniques for summarising, analysing and memorising information. This is supported by several lessons incorporated into the PSHCE programme in which you will be given the opportunity to apply your new skills.
  • Extra curricular activities - the Abbey School is a keen supporter of the "Work Hard, Play Hard" motto and we encourage you to maintain your extra curricular commitments where possible. Many Lower V and Upper V girls are members of the Senior Choir, the Orchestra or one of the many school sports teams. Some take part in Public Speaking, Speech and Drama or attend Medicine Club. Many girls opt for the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh Silver award. Whatever your talents or interests there are extra curricular activities for you!
  • Events - there is the opportunity for a social event at the end of Lower V to celebrate completing the RS GCSE. However, the much anticipated event for the two years is the Upper V Celebration Day. This comprises a morning of fun activities followed by the UV Prom in the evening and is held just before the Upper V study leave commences.

The Fifth Form years are busy and challenging but also exciting and fulfilling.
