Denise Lewis Visit

Denise Lewis warming up Hurdles

Denise Lewis OBE, who won Gold in the heptathlon in the Sydney Olympics, spent the afternoon with girls from The Abbey on Wednesday 19 May and made a real impact.

Denise first spoke to an enthusiastic audience in the school Lecture Theatre telling of her own experiences and inspiring them to push themselves in Sport. The girls got the opportunity to see her gold medal, ask lots of questions and hear what it takes to become such a successful Olympian.

Thirty of the strongest athletes from the school (between the ages of 10 and 16) then enjoyed a training session with Denise at the Palmer Park Athletics stadium - a truly unforgettable experience. They worked on sprint technique, hurdling and long jump and Denise gave personal tips to each girl.

Many thanks to Mr Neale, Lizzie's Dad, who won this exciting visit for the school in a British Airways competition.

The story featured on BBC South with the presenter Sally Taylor, an Abbey Old Girl herself, reminiscing about athletics at school.
