BBC film girls learning in 3D!

BBC Newsround 3D is better than a model Mrs Johnson being interviewed

There was much excitement at The Abbey as reporter, Ricky Boleto and a cameraman came to film a 3D Biology lesson for BBC Newsround.

This was a wonderful opportunity for the pupils to sample how innovations they can see in films such as ‘Avatar’ will revolutionise the classroom. They really enjoyed their Biology lesson with a difference - studying the ear in 3D with the aid of their special glasses. Mrs Johnson who taught the Year 7 girls is incredibly enthusiastic about the technology and described it as 'a larger leap than that from paper to the whiteboard'. The girls were all thrilled by how visually stimulating and interactive their lesson was and were very willing to be interviewed on camera.

The school is committed to being at the forefront of educational ICT and is developing close links with many leading companies. Texas Instruments had earlier this year invited The Abbey to be the lead UK school in holding initial trials of 3D learning and the BBC had picked up on the story.

Kathryn Macaulay, Director of ICT and data systems at The Abbey describes the experience: 'Not only do pupils see shape and perspective but they form the concept being taught in a visual way which is incredibly valuable to learners of all ages. The pupils are inspired to learn as they conquer challenging concepts with ease. 3D is the environment of their present and technological future.'

A team of budding school journalists filmed the making of the news item and interviewed the reporter. They will produce this as a film for BBC School Report in March.
