The Abbey School celebrated another excellent year of GCSE results with 77.8% of all papers being A* or A. 8 girls gained 10 or more A*s and 33 girls (a third of the year group) gained 10 or more A* or A grades. Many girls came into the school to collect their results on their way to celebrate in style at the Reading Festival which started today and there was much excitement in the air.
Freya Wheelwright was delighted at her 8A* and 3A grades as she has battled with Ollier’s disease (a rare bone condition) which has meant her missing a lot of lessons due to various operations and spending over a year in a wheelchair for which The Abbey installed special lifts to ensure her access to all parts of the school.
Chloé Thépaut deserves a special mention for gaining 11 A* grades when her mother tongue is actually French and she moved to England at aged 9. Two of the sportiest girls in the year group – Chloë Lyons and Emily Kirkham who both play county hockey and are trialling for the South of England team - showed that they are also stars in the classroom by gaining 10 A* grades.
Alice Irvine gained 8A* and 2 A grades ensuring family celebrations as this follows her sister Laura’s whose 4 A grade A levels last week ensured her Cambridge place.
Headmistress, Barbara Stanley said: “It is wonderful to be able to see the joy on the girls’ faces as I have known them and keenly observed their development since they joined The Abbey. It is particularly satisfying to see so many girls surpassing their expectations and I am sure they will be dynamic Sixth Formers.”
