Climbing in the Peak District

We have an exciting programme of outdoor and adventurous activities running at The Abbey. The girls have the opportunity to take part in activities such as rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, orienteering, archery, sailing, mountain walking and problem solving. We believe that taking part in adventurous activities is a very worthwhile experience and can enrich the girls' time at The Abbey.

The Outdoor Activity Programme is ever evolving – the overall plan is that at Lower III, Upper III and Lower IV girls can take part in Multi Activity Programmes where they have the opportunity to try out a number of different activities, for example, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, orienteering, problem solving, archery, ropes course etc. At UIV and LV girls can follow short programmes in particular activities, for example, archery, kayaking, rock climbing, sailing etc. Then at UV and above girls can follow longer more in depth programmes. There will also be exciting ‘one-off’ sessions occasionally.

While the emphasis is definitely on enjoyment and trying out new things, it is important that the girls can really learn and develop within these activities, so the programme offers further development after basic taster sessions. The ethos throughout is to learn and develop the skills in a safe and enjoyable environment and then to put these skills to the test in more challenging ways and to take more responsibility. For example Upper V climbers last year followed a 10 week course at a local indoor climbing wall where we looked at safety and movement skills, before we progressed on to more challenging routes and situations at Stanage Edge in the Peak District.

Outdoor and adventurous activities takes place in the time slot straight after school (eg 4.00pm-6.00pm) and will sometimes involve further evening or weekend trips. Wherever possible the girls will be able to work towards nationally recognised certificates and awards (eg the British Canoe Union star award system). You could also count these activities towards Go4it!, D of E and CAS as well as taking part purely for the fun of it!
