Written Paper – 2 hours 40%

Coursework – One project 60%

SPECIFICATION CONTENT

  1. Materials and Components – fibres and fabric properties; product maintenance and fitness for purpose; finishing processes; dyeing and printing; decoration and enhancement; components.
  2. Design and Market Influences – Product design; product analysis and evaluation; Social, Cultural, Moral, Health and Safety and Environmental issues and effects.
  3. Processes and Manufacture – Techniques; Textiles production and manufacture; production and planning; Quality; Use of ICT including use of CAD/CAM.

COURSEWORK

This is undertaken during the latter part of the course (during Upper V (Year 11)). The skills developed during the course in Lower V (Year 10) will be used to demonstrate creativity in a single design and make activity chosen by the student from a range of board-set tasks. The tasks, which will be reviewed every two years, will be based on a variety of contexts with a choice of design brief for each. It is expected that candidates should spend approximately 45 hours on this activity and the majority of this work done in class under controlled supervision. The coursework involves a design folder together with one piece of practical work. Evidence of the development, planning and evaluation of the product is recorded in a design folder consisting of approximately 20 A3 pages.
