Physical Education

The Abbey School Physical Education Department aims to provide a supportive, but challenging environment to enable girls to reach their full potential. We aim to promote the enjoyment of physical activity, which will encourage girls to continue to participate after they have left school.

Pupils in UIII- UIV ( Year 7 - Year 9) are allocated 4 core PE lessons a week, this includes one swimming lesson. The lessons provide a range of activities which primarily encompass the aesthetics, games and aquatic areas. During these lessons pupils focus on the development and refinement of skills. In LV (Year 10), pupils continue to refine skills learnt in the previous years but also develop a greater knowledge and understanding of tactical play, coaching and umpiring. In UV (year 11)pupils are given opportunity to learn about other sports which have not been covered previously and the opportunity to gain either the Bronze Medallion Lifesaving Award or the Junior Sports Leaders certificate is also available.

There are alsomany extra-curricular opportunities for girls with a full timetable of varied clubs and fixtures.

GCSE

Physical Education as a GCSE subject is growing in popularity at The Abbey and many girls comment on its diversity. Its key focus is on Exercise and Training, Applied Anatomy and Physiology, and a practical component which has a performance related element . This course provides a good basis for Advanced Level Study but it is not a pre-requisite to study at AS level.
