The course is designed to get students thinking critically about ethical values and philosophical questions.
The department starts full course GCSE Religious Studies in Philosophy and Ethics in year 9 (UIV) with all students taking their GCSE early in Year 10 (LV). We follow AQA (syllabus A). In UIV the girls study Christian ethics covering the right to life, the use of medical technology, personal responsibility, social responsibility, global concerns and conflict. Students are encouraged to make links with other subjects where relevant.
In LV (year 10) the girls grapple with such philosophical questions as:
- Does God exist?
- What are the characteristics of God?
- What is revelation?
- Why is there evil and suffering in the world?
- Is science compatible with religion?
- Is there an afterlife?
A variety of religious and non religious responses are considered and evaluated. All students are expected to study this subject. There is no coursework.#
