As an academic discipline Music combines many separate skills; we, therefore, give all pupils the opportunity to enjoy practical work, while developing an appreciation of the cultural background to various styles and an understanding of the theory behind the music.
All pupils study Music in the first 3 years of the Senior School, with UIV girls benefiting from having two sets (each of around 12 to 15 pupils) per class, tailored to musical experience and ability. Girls are introduced to music software from the outset while working at composing and listening projects in our own dedicated Music ICT room. All pupils are encouraged to develop performing skills, with care taken to ensure able musicians have every opportunity to develop their talents to the full. Lessons combine a wide variety of activities and are intended to provide a foundation for further musical study as well as the beginnings of a life-long love of music. The music curriculum is complemented by our full and exciting programme of extra-curricular activities and by numerous concerts, concert trips and other musical activities such as the annual 3-day Music Competition.
Music is a popular subject in LV/UV (Year 10 & 11)with pupils studying for the International GCSE. The course is suited to any musician of Grade 5 performing standard or above and also provides unparalleled preparation for A Level or IB. Traditional components of listening, performing and composing are found alongside the study of a set work and various styles of world music, while encouraging the development of historical appreciation and of general musicianship skills.
