Mathematical thinking is important for all members of a modern society. At The Abbey we aim to build girls' confidence and enable girls to develop enthusiasm for and enjoyment of the creative and problem solving aspects of mathematics.
The subject is compulsory to GCSE and pupils are taught in sets from LIV. Girls are encouraged to think independently and to see the relevance and importance of mathematics in everyday life. A variety of teaching and learning activities in the classroom, including pair work, group work and individual practice, provide girls with the opportunity to extend their problem solving skills and to develop clear reasoning and logical thought. Pupils are entered annually for the National Mathematical Challenges and it is usual for several to progress to subsequent rounds. The Department regularly sets challenges, and girls are encouraged to attend local lectures, team events and Masterclasses. Maths Club runs once a week after school for UIII - UIV girls. Here girls are able to work with others of different ages and similar interests as well as to have fun whilst engaging in problem solving. The Department holds a Biennial Puzzle Challenge Day for girls in UIII and LIV which gives girls the chance to develop their lateral thinking, problem solving and team building skills during an action packed session.
Our purpose is to develop each pupil's mathematical ability to the highest possible level and to foster an interest in the subject. All girls are entered for the Higher Tier GCSE and the subject is a popular choice in the Sixth Form, with a good uptake in a range of courses and impressive results. Enthusiastic, committed and approachable staff are generous with their time to help girls outside lessons and there is a weekly Maths Drop In session, dedicated to this support, which is held weekly during a lunch hour.
