GCSE Latin

Roman Wedding

The new Latin Specification commenced in September 2009.

The new course contains the elements of translation, comprehension, grammar work and Roman Literature. It is expected that all Latin candidates will be entered for the Higher Tier, which covers grades A* to D. This new course is exciting and inviting and we hope that the girls will enjoy it. No course work is involved in this subject.

The course will lead to four final examination papers.

UNIT 1 1 hour – 25% of the total mark.

A language paper, including translation and comprehension, for which a good working knowledge of language and vocabulary is required. A defined list of the vocabulary needed is provided.

UNIT 2 1 hour – 25% of the total mark.

A second language paper, including translation and comprehension, which is a little more demanding than Unit 1. Once again, a good working knowledge of language and vocabulary is required. A defined list of the vocabulary needed is provided.

UNIT 3 1 hour – 25% of the total mark.

This is a Latin Literature paper. Prose authors such as Cicero and Tacitus are studied and translation of the text is required, as well as Literary criticism.

UNIT 4 1 hour - 25% of the total mark.

This is a second Literature paper. Verse authors such as Virgil, Catullus, Ovid or Horace are studied and translation of the text is required, as well as Literary criticism.

Much emphasis is placed on enjoyment of the Language and Literature. Lively discussions are encouraged and personal response to the texts is welcomed. Parallels between Ancient and Modern Civilisations are frequently drawn.

This course provides a sound base for the Advanced Level course and the full specification can be downloaded below..
