Dropping litter has always been a problem that is too large to solve. Now, as environmental fanatics will be delighted, there seems to be a way around this predicament, as Marks & Spencer have created sweet wrappers that blossom into colourful flowers when buried in the garden.
The secret behind this is; the wrappers contain candytuft seeds, which are adored by butterflies and other insects. The paper comes in several colours; pink, white, red or purple flowers which blossom within weeks. The wrapper can even be cut into several pieces and will flower just as successfully when planted around the garden.
If the packaging is successful then Marks & Spencer plan to extend their creative idea to other products. A Marks & Spencer spokesman is very pleased and proud to have eco-friendly wrappers on sale. She says that the advantages are that once the sweets have been eaten they can be planted and will attract butterflies, which counts as a form of recycling.
Many local councils are trying to prevent litter from being dropped but it is a war that can never be won. To try and stop litter altogether would be an incredibly hard task, despite the fines that have to be paid for anyone caught littering the environment. Reading’s Council fines £75 for every piece of litter that is seen being dropped by a member of the council on patrol. However, not every street and public place can be watched all the time without vast expense and people may argue that the Council has no power in their homes.
Sophie thinks that it is important for the new generations to be aware that we are destroying the planet and until such a time occurs, these wrappers will prevent us from damaging our world. The fact that Marks & Spencer have been able to create a flowering sweet wrapper is incredible, if not a miracle.
So it seems that we may have found a solution to the problem of wasting wrappers and packaging which cannot be recycled. This ingenious discovery could save the environment, one sweet at a time.
