With a 100% take up of Language and Literature at GCSE, English remains a strong subject choice in the Sixth Form and enjoys outstanding academic results.
The English department maintains close links with the Library for specific book events, meeting authors, the Carnegie Shadowing Scheme and national competitions. Strong links are also enjoyed with the Drama department and the girls enjoy regular theatre trips in every year group.
The English department runs a variety of extra curricular activities - creative writing groups, a book club and public speaking competitions. In recent years there have been a number of outstanding successes by girls - an Upper V (year 11) team won the UK Final of the English Speaking Competition, one Lower IV (year 8) pupil won The Times natural story writing competition and another won the Amnesty International poetry competition, South-East Region.
A team from Upper III (Year7) have qualified for the national semi finals in The Times Spelling Bee competition and public speaking and debating hold popular clubs and competitions.
