The new Classical Greek Specification commenced in September 2009.

The new course contains the elements of translation, comprehension, grammar work, Literature and Greek Civilisation. This new course is exciting and inviting and we hope that the girls will enjoy it. No course work is involved in this subject.

The course will lead to four final examination papers, taken from a possible five papers. All candidates must take Units 1 and 2, and then a further two Units from the other three offered.

  • UNIT 1 1 hour – 25% of the total mark.

A language paper, including translation and comprehension, for which a good working knowledge of language and vocabulary is required. A defined list of the vocabulary needed is provided.

  • UNIT 2 1 hour – 25% of the total mark.

A second language paper, including translation and comprehension, which is a little more demanding than Unit 1. Once again, a good working knowledge of language and vocabulary is required. A defined list of the vocabulary needed is provided.

  • UNIT 3 1 hour – 25% of the total mark.

This is a Greek Literature paper. Prose authors such as Plato and Herodotus are studied and translation of the text is required, as well as Literary criticism.

  • UNIT 4 1 hour – 25% of the total mark.

This is a second Literature Paper. Verse authors such as Homer and Euripides are studied and translation of the text is required, as well as Literary criticism.

  • UNIT 5 1 hour – 25% of the total mark.

This paper is called ‘Sources for Classical Greek’ – it is a Greek Civilisation paper, covering a number of aspects of life in Greece, primarily Athens. Various topics are offered, under headings such as ‘Work and Domestic Life’ and ‘Society and Citizenship’. Candidates will analyse, evaluate and respond and answer questions on the sources.

Much emphasis is placed on enjoyment of the Language and Literature. Lively discussions are encouraged and personal response to the texts is welcomed. Parallels between Ancient and Modern Civilisations are frequently drawn.

This course provides a sound base for the Advanced Level course.
