GCSE Science

biology

Science is a core curriculum subject and pupils can select one option from a choice of two. Both triple and double science would allow the pupil to study Biology, Chemistry or Physics at Advanced Level. Each option consists of an equal portion of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and specialists in that subject teach the pupils. Pupils will follow the WJEC specification.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics as 3 Subjects

This provides the more detailed course of study of the three science subjects. The science teachers recommend pupils who are very interested in science subjects to follow this option. All three science subjects must be studied and the pupils will gain three GCSE grades, one for each of the science subjects. The time allocation is 12 teaching periods per week. The pupils will sit three examinations in each subject at the end of Upper V. Throughout the course they will have carried out supervised coursework and this will represent 25% of the final GCSE mark in each subject.

Science and Additional Science (Double Science)

Science and Additional Science are separate qualifications, each containing subject matter from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Assessment for each qualification is by three 45 minute examinations (one in each subject) and supervised coursework, each comprising 25% of the marks. All examinations will be taken at the end of Upper V.

It is possible to proceed to Advanced Level in any or all of the 3 science subjects from this option. The course is suitable for potential students of medicine or veterinary medicine.
