GCSE Art and Design

GCSE Art and Design

The Art and Design course consists of two components – portfolio of work 60% and final Externally Set Task 40%. Candidates submit two units of coursework in addition to the externally set task. The two projects we currently undertake are Pop Art and Portraiture. Girls will spend two terms on each project. This consists of producing 2-4 A1 preparation sheets showing research development and experimentation which is completed over one term. Then one term is spent on producing the final piece which is usually an acrylic painting on quality canvas board or a 3D sculpture.

The Pop Art project is based on popular culture in both form and content. Candidates research the pop artists of the 1960s before producing their own ideas based on the popular culture of today. The two projects start with an investigation into past and contemporary artists’ work which relate directly to each topic. The course is centred on the interests and ideas of each individual girl. The Art Staff provide the expertise and guidance for candidates to fulfil their creative potential.

The Externally Set Task requires candidates to produce a unit of work in response to a list of starting points, with provision of up to three months for preparatory, research and developmental work with teacher guidance. Candidates will have up to ten hours in which to complete their final piece.
