"The tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It is not a calamity to die with dreams unfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for."
~Benjamin Mays
At the Abbey we realise that everybody is special with their own unique set of individual qualities. We ensure that we provide the opportunities for each girl to identify her strengths and develop her ultimate aspirations.
The Careers department begins lessons in UIII and LIV where girls are encouraged to develop a broad range of skills and open their eyes to the possibilities available to them in the world around them. In UIV, girls begin more formal Careers lessons and individual interviews. They are encouraged to keep their options open by choosing an appropriate set of GCSE subject choices.
In LV and UV Careers lessons and individual interviews continue including a Morrisby Profile test which formally identifies their aptitudes in preparation for choosing the next stage in their education either AS/A2 levels or IB.Girls have taster lessons in their chosen subjects as part of their Sixth Form Experience day.
Throughout this time other initiatives such as ‘Take your Daughter to Work’ and ‘Work experience placements’ also take place. We also hold a major Careers Convention every two years at which parents, many Old Girls and local businesses showcase different careers options and give invaluable advice to the girls.
The girls are encouraged to develop a work hard/play hard attitude and to embrace each opportunity which comes their way.
