Eggs-citing Science Week

New Arrivals! Handling the Chicks Bug and Reptile Visit Bug and Reptile Visit

Science week has been great fun! We hope that everyone learnt something new and found something to inspire them.

On Tuesday 9th February Dr Jasmine showed Year 4 and Year 6 girls aspects of where science and art meet.  They ranged from colour mixing and rainbows to optical illusions and centripetal force paintings.

On Wednesday 10th February, Ian Dunne – a truly eccentric, but very knowledgeable scientist - had the girls fully engaged and shaking with laughter as he explained various phenomena, including gravity, inertia, electricity and flight.

Thursday’s visitor was Martin, 'the Bug Man', who showed Year 3 and Year 5 girls some amazing creatures including a bearded dragon lizard, cockroaches, snakes, a red-kneed tarantula and a praying mantis. Many of the girls were able to handle the bugs and reptiles and a lucky few even had a stick insect crawl on them! The girls learned information about how the animals live, feed and grow, as part of our exciting Science week.  His open after-school session also proved very popular with girls from other years - and their parents!

On Monday and Friday, Key Stage 2 girls themselves were the presenters, demonstrating and explaining their own favourite scientific artefacts. Among other items, we had gloop, talking skeletons and ‘piecrete’.

Throughout the week, the lab has had a succession of girls coming to observe the growth of our nine chicks. The chicks also visited all areas of the school. Their development has been fascinating and we are sad to see them leave today.  Fortunately we shall be able to follow their development, as seven are being homed by Lily, Amelia, Georgia and Charlotte. The remaining two went yesterday with the Bug Man. We have been promised regular updates and photos.

Science story sessions took place in the Library, Science ‘show and tell’ sessions in the lab and the girls greatly enjoyed the Bristol University Chem@rt quiz on the display board in the Kensington. The results of the various Science Week quizzes will be announced after half-term.

On Thursday evening parents took part in practical taster sessions to illustrate science at the Junior School and heard about the curriculum and our ethos as well as enjoying refreshments including C2H5OH and H2O.
