Burns Night Supper

Burns Night Supper Girls, Parents and Staff join hands for 'Auld Lang Syne'

Once again the Lower III (Year 6) girls at The Abbey Junior School celebrated Burns Night in style with the pupils wearing ‘a touch of tartan’ for the occasion. This year they had taken special care with their dress and looked wonderful.

The haggis was piped in and addressed by Bill Copland, a member of the Reading Pipe Band. The school chef had prepared a three course traditional Scottish feast with Irn Bru for the toasts!  Mrs Stanley, the Headmistress, proposed the ‘Toast to the Lasses’, remembering highlights of the girls’ journey through the Junior School. Burns’ songs and poems were performed by the girls and staff, including ‘Tam O’Shanter’.

The evening continued with a lively Ceilidh and parents joined the girls for the final half hour. The girls have been learning some Scottish Country Dances in preparation for the event and enjoyed performing these to their parents. The evening concluded with the girls performing ‘My Love is like a Red, Red Rose’ ‘followed by the whole company singing ‘Auld Lang Syne’.

Mrs Glithro, Deputy Head of the Junior School and organiser of the evening, said, ‘Our Burns Supper has become a real tradition for the Lower III girls.  Everyone had a great time and more girls enjoyed haggis than thought they would!’
