Music

Belle Plates Club

Alongside the prominence of music within the curriculum there are many extra-curricular clubs run in school, including an orchestra, flute ensemble, belleplates, percussion group, brass group, guitar ensemble, recorder groups and numerous choirs which take place either during lunch times or after school. Click on the audio file links below to hear some of the girls' music-making.

Girls have the opportunity from Lower I (Year 3) upwards to learn to play an instrument, and currently there are over 150 lessons given a week by 12 visiting instrumental teachers. The instruments offered are violin, cello, cornet, tenor horn, trombone, guitar, flute, piano, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, saxophone and singing. Girls in Year 2 (Transition) learn the recorder as part of the music curriculum and have the opportunity to learn the piano or violin.

Visiting musicians and trips to concerts or to take part in festivals enhance the curriculum. Most notably, the choirs from the Junior School have qualified for the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth (singing in Birmingham Symphony Hall) and, closer to home, have won trophies at the Woodley Festival. The Year 5 girls (Upper II) take part annually in the Royal Schools of Church Music Festival.
