September by Years 5 & 6
The Upper Junior gardening girls are in the process of harvesting the last of the summer vegetable crops, including courgettes, tomatoes, onions and potatoes. Other jobs in the garden include collecting golden raspberries, pears and crab apples. In the coming weeks, they will be clearing old beds and preparing the way for our new winter and spring vegetables.
May by Year 6
Lower III girls helped to harvest the winter vegetables grown by the gardening club in the Autumn Term. The crop included winter cabbages, Russian kale and turnips. The vegetables were given to the Junior School catering staff. We hope the girls enjoed the 'yummy' vegetable soup which was served in the Junior School Dining Room.
March by Year 4
Upper I girls looked in the garden at the end of March for signs of Spring. After the long cold winter lots of things were starting to grow. Sophia spotted the fat and furry magnolia buds. Frankie noticed that the rhubarb was looking very healthy, with its tightly packed leaves beginning to unfurl and its bright red stems. The girls observed the tiny buds on the willow fedge which has been trimmed back to keep its beautiful structure. Outside the garden, bulbs in the planters gave the grounds a welcome splash of colour.
December by Emily, (Year 6)
In the Junior School eco-garden this month, there are some lovely orange bracket fungi on the logs around the beds. We had a few frogs in the pond. We had some brilliant sage, rosemary and thyme in the herb beds. In November, on its little island in the middle of the garden, the magnolia tree’s leaves turned superb colours, but in December the tree was quite bare just like our two copper beech trees. The greenhouse has been moved out of the Eco-garden into the Kitchen garden beside the Dining Room. Gardening Club have planted some winter vegetables there.
