Extra-curricular drama clubs are offered to different ages before and after school, as well as during lunch times. These are extremely popular and give the girls enormous pleasure. The clubs are offered to girls who want to develop their performance and communication skills. All classes are run with an emphasis on taking part and having fun!
As well as the extra-curricular drama clubs, girls may choose to do Speech and Drama lessons as an optional extra. The girls work towards taking the Trinity Guildhall Speech and Drama examinations in the summer term. The syllabus involves developing improvised pieces and the original ideas come from the girls themselves through much discussion and negotiation. The performance skills may include a song, dance or movement routine, speaking poetry or prose from memory, performing a mime, using puppets, playing a musical instrument or performing a themed programme that includes some or all of the skills.
Devising a group improvised drama takes hours of focused and intense, creative thinking time. The girls have to listen to each others’ ideas, try the ideas out, reject ideas that do not work, add and remove dialogue or sometimes even throw out the original project and start again. A successful group will have learned how to communicate and negotiate with their peers and will have created a meaningful performance over the year.
