Girls find Science at The Abbey Junior School fun and exciting. There is a practical ‘learning by doing’ approach to the curriculum and girls build their scientific knowledge alongside their investigative skills.
From Key Stage 2, Science is taught by specialist staff and lessons take place in a spacious, purpose built laboratory which is well equipped with exciting resources. Girls use laptops for research and for data logging, tracking changes in temperature, sound or light. From Year 5, girls work with Bunsen burners and microscope slides. The curriculum is regularly enriched by visiting speakers and workshops, by relevant visits and through many cross curricular activities.
Extra-curricular clubs are very popular. Lower III (Year 6) girls enjoy the after school ‘Science Investigator Club’ where activities include building a model lighthouse, analysing owl pellets or designing a balloon-powered racing car! Younger girls have their own lunchtime club while the ecological garden offers scope for investigation of the natural environment.
Our research shows that girls feel very well prepared for the challenges of Science at Senior School and many develop an interest in a scientific career as a result of their Junior School experience.
The Science Department has recently been awarded the prestigious Primary Science Quality Mark at Gold level in recognition of our exciting and engaging learning opportunities.
