At The Abbey Junior School we are passionate about Mathematics and seek to engage the girls with lively learning experiences fostering their confidence, enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject. Our carefully planned curriculum follows and extends the National Numeracy Strategy, as well as the Renewed Primary Framework, progressively building knowledge and skills in handling numbers, developing logical reasoning and the ability to think in abstract ways. The girls have eight Numeracy lessons every week and work independently or collaboratively in pairs or groups depending on the task. Homework reinforces the learning objectives.
Throughout all our teaching we emphasise understanding and our small classes ensure that all girls are continuously monitored and assessed. The girls learn number bonds and tables, as fast recall of number facts is an important life skill. Each lesson incorporates an aspect of mental arithmetic and the girls are encouraged to work with a variety of methods when calculating mentally.
There are many opportunities for pupils to use ICT in Mathematics and our class teaching makes use of web-based software. We are fortunate to have excellent resources that are regularly upgraded. Each classroom is equipped with a projector and most with an interactive whiteboard, which enables the girls to work with Maths in a fun and interactive way. Recent acquisition of laptops also allows individual basis. At The Abbey we equip girls with problem-solving skills using differentiated and open-ended activities. The girls achieve high standards and proceed to the Senior School eager to continue their mathematical studies.
Our bright girls enjoy tackling a variety of mathematical challenges. Each November, our Upper Junior girls take part in the Maths Association 'Primary Maths Challenge' and many win top certificates. In addition to teaching the girls to use and handle Mathematics competently, we aim to instil in them an appreciation of the beauty and wonder of the subject. From Fibonacci to snowflakes, from prime numbers to infinity, Maths can be amazing and awesome. Recent intra-school projects have included Maths Week which included Maths poetry and a visit from a Maths Magician!
