From Reception all pupils study French for one lesson each week. At these earlier stages the language is taught in a more playful way. As the girls get older they progress from simple spoken French exercises through to reading and writing and more spontaneous French communication.
Basic vocabulary includes numbers to 100, colours, pets, houses, towns, their family, their hobbies and themselves.
Pupils are able to ask and respond to a variety of questions about themselves by Lower I (Year 3) and written French is introduced in Upper I (Year 4).
Upper II (Year 5) girls have an exciting opportunity to learn Spanish which provides them with an insight into this new language before they have the chance to take it up later in the Senior School. Please click here to view a selection of quotes from the Year 5 girls.
Spelling and grammatical differences are introduced through books, short video clips and ICT resources. The pupils are encouraged to use the target language as much as possible and they enjoy participating in the games and songs used in class.
