Link School in Uganda

uganda The School Former pupil, Bernadette, talks to Abbey pupils

The Abbey School recently welcomed some very special visitors from the Bishop Kivengere Girls’ School in Muyebe, Uganda. The two schools are planning to develop close links which will benefit the pupils in both countries. The visitors spent two days at The Abbey during which they gave assemblies about their school and life in Uganda, spent time in lessons and in the Chapel and saw the girls in action at the Gymnastics and Dance display. Year 9 girls had studied Uganda in their Geography lessons and prepared a wonderful welcome display.

Bishop Kivengere School was founded in 1974 (during the time of Idi Amin’s regime) to provide a much-needed secondary school for girls in this mountainous district in South East Uganda. An English lady, Liz Traill, was the pioneering first Headmistress of the school which started for 40 girls and now has 542 pupils and was amongst the group that visited The Abbey.

The motto of Bishop Kivengere School is ‘Tuhwerane’ – ‘Let’s help one another’ which perfectly sums up the aims of this partnership. The first step is for girls at both schools to exchange letters and establish a ‘pen pal’ relationship and there are many exciting ideas which will be developed. Staff from The Abbey will be visiting the school this summer and hopefully in the future Sixth formers and gap students will be able to visit and cement the relationship.
