IB Diploma

ib girls celebrate

The 2011 International Baccalaureate Diploma results at The Abbey School are outstanding, with an average score of 39 points (versus the Diploma average of 30). This is only the second year of IB results since The Abbey gained IB World School status in 2008 and the average is even higher than in 2010 (when one student scored a maximum 45 and the average of 38 placed the School as 3rd best at IB in the country). 6 of the 15 girls achieved 40 points or more and two thirds scored at least 38 (for context, Oxbridge offers start from 38 points).

Hannah, Head Girl for the past year, was delighted with her score of 43 points which confirms her place on the highly sought-after War Studies course at King’s College, London. Emily (41 points) is going to read Law at Bristol, Chloé (41 points) will study Biomedical Science at Imperial College and Anu (40 points) is going to read Medicine at Liverpool.

Other girls secured their places at top universities including York, Durham, Exeter and Birmingham and can now relax and enjoy their summer whilst their peers who did A levels await their results in August.

Headmistress, Barbara Stanley said “These results confirm The Abbey in the top echelon of IB schools in the UK. This is a tremendous achievement and I would like to pay tribute to the exceptional work of the girls and their teachers. We believe that offering our Sixth Formers the choice between A levels and the IB allows students to pick the right qualification for them and is a sign of a forward-looking School. The IB Diploma is a wonderful qualification and recent research has shown that IB students are particularly successful in their undergraduate studies thanks to the independent study skills and intellectual curiosity they have developed.”

The IB Diploma is an international qualification and over 80,000 students from around the world took their exams this summer. IB students take papers in six subjects (including a Modern Foreign Language, a Science, English and Maths) – 3 at higher level and 3 at standard level at the end of the two year course. The points awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest) with 4 counting as a pass. Students can also be awarded up to three additional points for their combined results on Theory of Knowledge and their extended essay. The highest total that can be awarded is 45 points and the diploma is only awarded to students who gain at least 24 points, subject to performance across the whole diploma and satisfactory participation in Creativity, Action and Service (CAS).
